$209,000 For Hovercraft
(N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 29. A hovercraft to be used for rescue work at Mangere international airport and emergencies on either of the harbours will be reconditioned and remodelled by Air New Zealand engineers. The hovercraft will arrive in Auckland from Singapore in a tanker on May 13. It was bought jointly by the Government and the Auckland Regional Authority for 8209,000 from the British Hovercraft Corporation. The craft has been used to support off-shore oil drilling in Malaysia but is fully operational. It will be fully stripped and refitted with rescue and fire-fighting equipment. Extensive modifications will be made to convert it from passenger carriage to rescue work. A comprehensive crew training programme will take three to six months.
