STOCKMARKET CONTINUES ITS STEADY DECLINE
The New Zealand stockmarket fell again yesterday, confirming the belief that the booming confidence of the last few months is over. With some notable exceptions, movements were small, especially among leading { issues, for which falls outnumbered rises by two to one.
It was an active market,! with a wide range of issues changing hands. Steady prices predominated, and only 20 per cent of the sales were at higher prices. In Christchurch, the turnover was the highest for a week. There was also a volatile element in the market, however, with six issues recording large changes in price. Wellington Publishing, Wil-
ison Malt and Smith-Biolab put on 10c each, and Steel | and Tube gained 15c. Among i i the falls, John Burns lost 15c and Wilson Neill fell by al- i most as much. i C.F.M., which would be I steady after the ex bonus and dividend date at 170 c, lost , 2c. while Waitaki, whose bid , for C.F.M. failed this month, < lost sc. Tasman, the only leader to:
move more than marginally, put on another 5c to close at 1025 c. New Zealand Paper Mills, up 7c, and R. and E. Tingey, up 6c. also stood out among the rises.
Leaders in the overseas list continued to rise. The C.S.R. issues gained, to come together at 970 c, Mount Isa put on 30c to 945 c, and B.H.P. reached 1900 c.
