CAPPING WEEK EVENTS

Marathons and underpants will play a large part in Capping Week stunts arranged by students of the University of Canterbury.

Students will “down trousers" and march along Stafford Street, Timaru, next Monday, parodying a wellknown advertisement for men’s underwear, in an effort to increase capping magazine sales there. Another semi-naked student will be led through Christchurch department stores by a “gorilla" this Friday to advertise the charity to which proceeds from Capping Week will go. An Objection

Permission for the “underpants march” was given this week by the Timaru City Council, although an objection was raised by Cr J. M. Bishop, who said it was “beneath the dignity of the city.” Marathon attempts by the students are various, although for many of the events there are no known records. The House of Stanford Tea Drinkers' Association will hold a tea-drinking marathon at the Northlands shopping centre and will, it says, “be handing out free cups of tea to little old ladies." The association has a membership drawn from Christchurch College.

A pram (described but without baby) will be pushed by a team of students from Timaru to Christchurch, bearing a letter from the Mayor of Timaru (Mr D. R. Dowell) for the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Guthrey). The team will travel through Monday night, with a vehicle escort, and will arrive in Christchurch on Tuesday morning. Meal Al Fresco

Two well-dressed diners, complete with gypsy violinist and waiters, will appear in an open-air restaurant in the middle of the High StreetColombo Street intersection for lunch on Monday. They will have * meal, although the menu is not yet decided.

A world buzz-bar eating competition, not recognised by the International Olympic Committee, will be held outside the United Service Hotel this Friday after speeches from the hotel’s balcony. Among the speakers will be Mr D. B. Rich, an official of this year’s charity—the Special Class After-Care Society—the capping controller (Mr H. Wauchop), members of the university, and a politician still to be chosen and invited. Other stunts will include the annual chariot race at New Brighton this Saturday, a surfboard race, and the annual “Bike Race** in the Avon Riven and the arrival in the

city of the Avonhead hillbillies, rafting down the Avon from the Ham site. “Top Secret”

Some other stunts have been classified “top secret" and are guarded by a new “security service.” The route for "Procesh” next Wednesday will be the same as last year's—along Hereford Street from Rolleston Avenue to Cambridge Terrace, into Cashel Street and over Colombo Street to Manchester Street, from there by way of Gloucester Street, Colombo Street, Cathedral Square, and Worcester Street back to Rolleston Avenue.

The parade of floats will begin at 10 a.m. The students’ revue, “It,” will open at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre this Friday and will continue nightly (except for Sunday, May 4) to May 10. The “Miss University" contest will be held in the university hall on Tuesday. Capping magazine sales will begin next Monday and, besides Christchurch, will be sold in Nelson, Blenheim, Kaikoura, Timaru, and on the West Coast. The students hope to collect between $9500 and $10,500 for charity during the week, and expect to sell 54,000 capping magazines.
