CONCERTS “STUFFY”

There were signs that younger people rejected the present orchestral concerts and in fact were scared away, the president of the Chamber Music Federation (Mr A. Hilton) said in his address to the federation’s annual meeting. He said that the interest of teen-agers in serious music could be judged by the large proportion that bought classical records. There was never a better moment to make a serious effort to attract young people to the performing arts than now. “Why haven’t they come by the thousands by themselves?” Mr Hilton said. “This is a big question, and one can only guess at part of the answer." he said. "Perhaps we scare them away, bymaking them feel uncomfortable. “I know of several young people with musical family backgrounds, and who themselves play an instrument, but who do not attend concerts because they find them stuffy.”
