HOUSING OF AMERICANS
Timani Seeks Loan (From Our Own Reporter> TIMARU. April 28. Authority to borrow $375,000 with which to build or buy houses in Tiiuaru for Americans associated with the satellite-tracking station to he established at Mount John is to be sought by the Timaru City Council. The council this evening adopted a housing committee recommendation that to enable the council to meet, at no cost to the ratepayers, the housing requirements of the Americans, application be made to the Local Authorities Loans Board for authority to raise a loan of $375, noo for the purchase or erection of the houses needed.
The Mayor (Mr D. R. Dowell) said he was pleased the United States Air Force had chosen Titnaru as the headquarters for its Mount John site. There would be 12 to 16 single men and 27 to 31 married men with families based in Ttmam. The married men would require homes for rental. and as these were not readily available locally, the council would, if necessary build or buy for rental the homes needed to house them.
