A. Mulley Retires
f.V Z tress Assn— Copyright) SYDNEY. The colourful and controversial jockey Athol Mulley, has retired from racing in Sydney after 29 years as one of its f reales! jockeys. He rod« his rsl winner here in 1940. Mulley. aged 45. intends to live and work with racehorses at Coffs Harbour in northern New South Wales and has applied to the Australian Jockey club for a licence to train and ride horses on country racecourses He will neither seek nor accept race mounts in Sydney again. Mulley has figured in some of Australia's biggest racing sensations. In 1944. after winning 15 successive races on Bernborough. he was sacked when the champion failed in the Caulfield Cup. Twelve years later Mulley. and a well known Melbourne bookmaker. Tom Marnew. were warned off the Flemington racecourse by Victorian Racing Club officials after Inquiries into allegations concerning the failure of Cambridge—the favourite in the 1954 Australian Cup. Mulley rode Cambridge.
