RACING Trentham Yearlings To Be Sold In Two Days

Dates have been set for the major bloodstock sales in the 1970 series and the National Yearling Sales will continue to be held at Trentham.

Announcing this in Wellington. Mr R. R. Trotter, managing director of Wright Stephenson and r ompany, Ltd, said representatives of the auctioneers, Wright Stephenson and Pyne, Gould. Guinness Ltd. had discussed the sales at a meeting in Hamilton with the council of the Thoroughbred Breeders* Association. Mr Trotter said the proposals of the auctioneers had met with unanimous support as being in the best marketing interests of the bloodstock industry. When asked by their council to express their views, all branches of the association had supported the decision that the National Yearling Sales should be continued at Trentham. Two-Day Sale "Because this is the premier bloodstock sale in the country, the offering will be limited by selection and sold over two days," said Mr Trotter

"The auctioneers will select a final catalogue from the yearlings nominated and a member of the association will be on the selection committee. Selection will be based primarily on pedigree but will take into account other relevant factors.”

The National Yearling; Sales will be held during the l Wellington Racing Club's summer carnival on Tuesday, and Wednesday. January 20 and 21. 1970. The annual mixed stock sale will be held on Friday. January 23. To accommodate yearlings which are of national sales standard, additional boxes will be built at Trentham. Mr Trotter said it had been decided to bring forward the annual Waikato sales to earlier in the season, Monday, February 18, 1970. during the Waikato Racing Club's summer meeting.

The Waikato branch of the breeders' association and the Waikato Racing Club had ap- 1 proved the date, and promotion of the sale was expected, to benefit greatly from its association with the race, meeting. "The quality and presentation of yearlings being offered at the Waikato sales are improving and this trend will, continue, particularly with

some measure of selection being applied at Trentham," said Mr Trotter. Different Market The Waikato sale was of sufficient standard to be held independently of the mixed 1 stock sale and at a date more, convenient to buyers and' vendors, said Mr Trotter. The date was sufficiently removed | from the Trentham sale for it I to be independently promoted!

among the somewhat different market of buyers who supported it. Mr Trotter said a two-day sale would still be held in Hamilton in the autumn. It would be a weanling sale and a separate sale of brood ntares and untried stock and racehorses on April 28 and 29. 1970. It was proposed to continue the special South Island sale of two-year-olds and mixed stock first held last year as

an annual fixture. This will be in Christchurch on August 13, 1970, at the time of the ! Grand National meeting. “The 1970 bloodstock sale ; series has been designed in {association with the breeders' association to provide a comprehensive marketing opportunity," said Mr Trotter. "In this way we hope to meet the requirements of an industry which is still growing in importance as an earner of overseas exchange.”
