The response to a recent drive to recruit men had been singularly unsuccessful, said the transmission-line engineer of the Electricity Department in Christchurch (Mr P. E. Dunn). Repeated advertisements during the last three weeks had led four or five men to apply for jobs building power lines. “We employed three men, two stayed for one day and the third for one week," he said.
