Trimaran At Anchor

The trimaran Jay El dropped anchor in the Whangarei Harbour tonight after being dismasted 420 miles out from Auckland at 7 a.m. on Friday and later taking on fuel from the launch Sirdar. Without the extra 60 gallons. the owner of the Jay El. Mr L. G. Ibbotson. a retired farmer, of Mount Russell, estimated that the yacht would have made only a quarter of the way to land. With two crew members, he had planned to follow the Auckland-Suva yacht race without competing and then “wander around the Pacific Islands for a few months."
