Anti-Anzac Vandals

(N.Z. Press Association' WELLINGTON, April 27. Anti-Anzac vandals were active in Wellington and at least two other centres at the week-end. In Wellington wreaths were taken down from the war memorial and arranged in a swastika formation at the base of the monument. Police discovered the rearranged wreaths yesterday morning and put them back in their original places. In Masterton two 30ft flagpoles were cut down in the early hours of Anzac day. Both were to have been used to fly the Union Jack later in the day.

Whoever cut down the flagpole rising from the roof of the Masterton Club apparently climbed on to the roof at the back of the club and walked about 5* yards across the roof to saw the pole through where it joined the building. A pole at the Masterton County Council building was eut part-way through with a saw but was left standing. It was later thought to be unsafe and the County Clerk (Mr W. S. Barnett) had it pulled down.

Three flags flying over wreaths laid on the New Plymouth war memorial during the Anzac Day dawn parade were interfered with on Saturday night.
