INDUSTRIAL UNREST

Wage Variation '•One Cause’

(N.Z. Press Association)

NAPIER, March 17.

One of the causes of industrial unrest in New Zealand was the extent of the wage drift away from award rates, the Secretary of Labour (Mr N. S. Woods) said in Napier today. Mr Woods was addressing the annual conference of the Federation of Master • Printers.

He said variation of wage rates happened to such an extent that it had been suggested New Zealand should revert to the old system of standard wage level pronouncements by the authorities.

“Because of the present drift away from, the minimum award rates, wage conflicts have moved away from the province of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act and there is more pressure on individual groups and employers,” he said.
