ADDINGTON MARKET Prime Steers And Store Cattle Cheaper

Prime steers eased considerably in value at the Addington market yesterday. With an entry of more than 420 head, the yarding was a little more than the trade required.

An entry of barely 1100 prime lambs met a strong sale throughout. Values for all classes were well up on last week’s rates.

Entries in the prime sheep section were the lightest of the season. Wethers showed ;

little change on recent rates, except for some of the best pens, but ewes showed a useful improvement on last week. A yarding of more than 500 store ca.ttle met a harder sale, with values distinctly easier on last Wednesday’s special sale.

Prime Lambs At 1090, compared with 2535 last week, the prime lamb yarding was well below trade requirements. Reflecting the prolonged dry conditions, most of the lambs were of only average quality. Three Friesian and Friesian cross cows sold from $94 to $ll5. Store Cattle For the third week in succession, there was an excellent yarding of beef-bred steers. With an entry of more than 500 head, it was the largest Tuesday market since the spring. With continued dry weather, and with no competition from southern buyers, the market was about $6 back on last Wednesday's special sale. Vealers At 120 head, the veal yarding was back to a more usual entry, but selling was harder, with only the best young cattle approaching last week’s rates. Best calves sold from >45 to $52, with odd. sales to $57.50; medium sold from $36 to $42 and small from $24 to $32. Fat Pigs There was a medium entry in the fat pig section, and quality was again mixed. Best

quality butchers’ porkers were on a par with last week's sale but secondary and lighter sorts were easier. Heavy porkers and light baconers were firm, and medium and heavy baconers again sold well. Twenty-two choppers were yarded, but overall. quality was much poorer. Values eased accordingly. L?ght S porkers, $l6 to >17.60. Medium, $18.40 to $21.40. Heavy, $23 to ‘525.50. Store Pigs The entry in the store pig section was the smallest for some weeks, and quality was quite good. Very few small weaners were penned, but good weaners met a strong demand, values being 50c a head up on last week’s rates. Competition was good on the slips and small stores, with values firm, and a small offering of large stores also sold well. Three in-pig sows made $33 to $35, while a sow with a third litter of nine well-grown pigs, made >5B. Values were:— Small weaners, >4.80 to >6. Best weaners, >6.90 to $8.50. Slips, $8.90 to $9.80.
