Presumed Lost
The sea-and-air search for the lone German swimmer, Mr Herbert Voigt, who has been reported missing after an attempt to swim the 11 miles from Perth to Rottness Island, is continuing, but the police now believe there is little chance of finding him alive. Mr Voigt set out yesterday to swim through shark-infested waters to the island, a popular pleasure resort, carrying only a spearfisherman’s knife strapped to bis leg. He was making the swim for a bet, his colleagues’ stake being two 18gallon kegs of beer, to be drunk at a party to celebrate the swim, if he completed it. —Perth, March 16.
