Former Stablemates First And Second

The former stablemates, Apollon and Wenew, staged an interesting two-sided finish to the Improvers’ Apprentices’ Handicap at Ashburton yesterday.

Apollon lasted by a head for his second successive win from J. L. Barr’s Riccarton

stable in the colours of Mr G. A. Hutton, president of the Hororata Racing Club. The stable apprentice, D. Tucker, rode Apollon to the lead early in the race, and the chestnuts solid gallop had most of the others in trouble near the home turn. Wenew was one of the exceptions, though. Having his first race for Mr P. K. Ryder, of Kaiapoi, Wenew finished doggedly from third on the home turn to run Apollon close.

Flipper was a length and a half back third, but he lost a winning chance at the start.

Eighth was the best the win favourite, Flower Girl, could manage, but his rider, R. J. McCann, was in difficulties after dropping his whip. Place Backers
