Obituary MATRON J. F. BROWN

Matron Joan Francis Brown, of the Royal New Zealand Nursing Corps, died in Wellington on Sunday. She held the appointment of Honorary Nursing Sister to the GovernorGeneral. Miss Brown was trained at the Whangarei Hospital and graduated in 1949. She nursed there until she joined the Royal New Zealand Nursing Corps as a regular nursing officer in 1954. During her service career, Matron Brown served in hospitals of the three Services, including Papakura Military Camp, the Waiouru Command, the Royal New Zealand Army Medical Corps Depot at Burnham, the

R.N.Z.N. Base Hospital at Devonport, and the R.N.Z.A.F. Base Hospital, Auckland. Overseas Service From 1961 to 1962 Miss Brown served in Malaysia, attached to the British military hospitals at Kamunting and Kinrarra. She was appointed matron of the Naval Base Hospital, Devonport, in April,

1963. She later served as matron of the R.N.Z.A.F. Base Hospital, Auckland, and was appointed principal matron of the R.N.Z.A.F. at the Air Department, Wellington, last November. Miss Brown was- a life member of the Whangarei Girls’ High School Association, a member of the Navy League, the Victoria League, and of the Registered Nurses’ Association. She was a keen follower of motor racing and acted as time-keeper at many major motor racing events, including the recent Pukekohe Grand Prix. A service will be held at the Chapel of St Christopher, Devonport, Auckland, this morning.
