AUCKLAND.
New Zealand hockey must extend its present playing season from six months to 10 months, and then it will get right to the top, the visiting German hockey coach, Mr Horst Wein, said in Auckland last night.
Brought here for a six-week coaching tour by the New Zealand Hockey Association under the sponsorship of the Rothmans Sports Foundation, Mr Wein was formerly the coach of the West German national side.
I Aged 29, he has coached; internationally in South i Africa, Rhodesia and the West Indies. “I only know that New Zealand hockey is one of the best in the world,” said Mr Wein. “The facilities in the whole of the country are so terrific it must make a step forward when New Zealand uses them to the best advantage. “But you must have a longer playing season than the present one of six months. You must play 10 months hockey. “Your players must concentrate on only the one kind of sport—hockey.
