FIRST S.I. BRANCH

Food Science Institute The first branch in the South Island of the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology was formed at a meeting in Christchurch this week. The institute aims to provide a meeting ground for persons who are associated with the food industry in any way to enable them to discuss common problems. The parent body was established in 1964 and branches have been formed in Auckland, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington.

The Christchurch meeting was attended by more than 60 persons and it is known that another 30 are interested. Among those present at the inaugural meeting were people associated with the production of raw materials for food, the processing, packaging and marketing of food, institutional cooking, and food industry research scientists. Mr R. O. Hooker was elected chairman, Mr S. G. Mansfield secretary, Mr D. W. Revell treasurer, and Messrs P. J. Anderson, R. W. Cawley, A. W. Davies and C. M. Driver were elected to the committee.

Mr S. G. Brooker, chief chemist of Abels, Ltd, spoke on the production of food fats.
