Fashionable Uniforms For Cricketers

Members of the touring English women’s cricket team have attracted considerable attention, not only by their sporting ability, but by their attractive uniforms.

With airline baggage restrictions to contend with, the uniforms (shown in the photograph above) have proved a boon, according to the team’s manager (Miss Valerie Hesmondhalgh). On the left, Miss June Moorhouse wears a roll collared. short-sleeved two-piece in cream crimplene. The skirt is straight and the top semifitted. The outfit is for official functions. Miss Jean Clark, beside her, has a sleeveless shift patterened in pale blue, deep blue and turquoise, and Miss Lynne Thomas (second from right) wears a short-sleeved turquoise dress, also in crimplene, with a slightly flared skirt. Both dresses are for less formal occasions, such as farewell receptions given by host associations. Travelling Uniform The team’s travelling uniform is worn by the captain, Miss Rachel Heyhoe (at right). It consists of a French navy blazer with pocket crest, white turtle-neck sweater, and a red crimplene skirt. Two other blouses can also be teamed with the skirt—a white, roll-collared blouse with long sleeves and a blue and white spotted blouse with white Peter Pan collar edged in blue.

The women have black patent, sling back shoes, with semi-low heels, and black patent handbags. The unforms were donated by a British chain store firm.

Comparison of the costs of living in England and New Zealand may be the subject

of a feature article written by the captain of the team, Miss Heyhoe. Three years ago, Miss Heyhoe gave up teaching physical education for journalism and is doing some feature articles for her newspaper in Wolverhampton while on tour.

“I am not covering the cricket but I send back stories on things 1 think might be of interest to our readers,” she said. Some Dearer

“We have all found that the cost of some of your goods here, such as filths and cosmetics, is almost twice as much as at home. Cars are much dearer, but meat is cheaper. A whole side of mutton here costs about as much as we would pay for one joint.” Many English people were under the impression they could come to Australia and New Zealand and “get rich quick.” said Miss Heyhoe. For this reason, she felt an article comparing the costs of living would enlighten many readers of her newspaper. Miss Heyhoe has worked on the women’s page and films and entertainment, and is now the only woman among nine men in the sports department. “I prefer writing about sport—any sport—because it is my main interest,” she said.

Making Dusters.— -When making dusters out of odds and ends of material, try to use only cotton fabrics. Synthetics will cause smearing when you polish.
