Young Ewes Sell Well At Little River

While young Romney ewes were not back to the old glamour levels at the Little River ewe fair yesterday, they showed a measure of recovery after two years of sagging markets.

Two years ago the market lost about $4 on in the face of declining values for cross-bred wool and fast year there was a further depreciation of about $1 to $1.50. Yesterday the latter drop was written off as values picked up again.

p The improvement in the market was quite marked > compared with last year’s depression sale. A year ago the top price was only $8: only seven out of 131 pens reached $7 and about half of the pens sold between $5 and $6. Yesterday, with the top pens bringing to $9.50, seven pens reached or bettered $9, 32 ■ pens reached or exceeded $B, ■and more than half of the 124 pens in the reduced offering this year reached or bettered $7. Only a dozen or so | pens sold in the $5 to $6 : range, in which so many pens found themselves a year ago. j A comparison of 20 pens sold yesterday and 18 pens of the same vendors’ sheep sold a year ago showed the improvement to be close to the $1.50 mark and individual vendors could show a bigger margin than that. The best of the young ewes realised from about $8.60 to $9.50, with good at $7.60 to $8.50, average at $6.70 to $7.50 and - others $5.20 to $6.50. At these levels values were fairly much in line with those ruling at the fine wool two-tooth fair at Ashburton last week, although the top sheep did not make as much as at Ashburton. OFFERING DOWN The offering of two-tooths at 6911 was down by about 800 on last year. It was again a very good one, with the average run iof sheep being rather better ; than last year. Some very fine top pens were included and compared with the average to good sheep they did not look particularly dear. While many sheep remained in the district, outside buyers were again ,in the market and . the top-priced pen in the sale ' was bought for Ikamatua on the ■ West Coast. : Some sheep also went to i Springston, Hororata, Kaiapoi, ! and Rangiora. MARKET TOPPERS The Masefield Romneys from . , Goughs Bay again took top hon- i ■ ours. D. O. Masefield this year topped the sale with a pen of 50 at $9.50. and with another ; pen of 49 making $8.60. his average for 99 was $9.05. Last I year R. T. Masefield headed the day at $B. and yesterday he had 56 at $9.40 and 60 at $9.20 and * for 166 selling from $7.70 he i averaged $8.82. Two vendors had sales at I $9.30. Springvale Estate (Little 1 River) had 69 at $9.30 and 60 at $9. For 451 sheep selling from $7.20 they averaged $8.65 compared with $6.70 for 588 j last year. J. R. Stanbury, of Puaha. Little River, also had 65 at $9.30 and for 302 making from $7.70, his average on this occasion was $8.29. whereas a ; year ago for 353 he averaged ! only a fraction more than $6. ' K. A. Rhodes (Flea Bay) also J sold 72 at $9 for his 178 making ifrom $8.30, the average was $8.58. j Once again Annandale Estate (Pigeon Bay) had a big offering. This time with 829 selling from $6.40 to $8.70 its average was $7.26, which was up about $1.76 on last year when 1143 averaged $5.50. HALF AS BIG The older ewe sale at Little River has been dwindling in size in recent years and yesterday it was only about half as big as last year, with only 919 head yarded. These were mainly five-year-olds and four and five-year-olds, and made very similar rates to last year, although some vendors showed slight advances. The best of these sheep sold from about $4 to $4.40 with Archery Club.—J. Cattermole carried on her recent good form in the women’s competition at the Christchurch Archery Club. Results were:—Men’s St George: iW. McClare 673, A. Drost 482. A. Smales 383. Women’s Albion: Cattermole 736, S. Palmer 435. Intermediate Albion: S. Fergtison 645, I. Butcher 446. others at $3.10 to $3.90. The five-year-olds sold from $3.10 to $4.40 and sheep carded as four and five-year-olds brought from $3.75 to $4.30. Two-shear ewes also sold for $4.30.

R. T. Masefield realised $4.40 for 54 five-year-olds and $4.10 for the remaining 54 in this pen. (Among four and five-year-olds W. S. L. Mcßae (Forsyth) realised $4.30 for 143 and G. W. Simes (Mount Bossu) $4.20 for 97. H. C. Vanstone (Little River) had 89 two-shear ewes at $4.30 The following is a range of values for two-tooth ewes, with last year s figures being given for comparison: 1969 1968 Best .. 8.60 to 9.50 7.00 to 8.00 ■ Good 7.60 to 8.50 6.00 to 6.90 > Av. . . 6.70 to 7.50 5.00 to 5.90 ; Others 5.20 to 6.50 3.60 to 4.80 I Details of sales were (sheep being Romneys unless otherwise > stated): Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd, i sold on account of:— ; A.
