MAORI ROCK DRAWINGS

Mr Fomison To Lecture

Were the Maoris just doodling when they drew on the walls of caves, or was there some other reason, perhaps of magical significance? This question will be among those discussed by Mr Tony Fomison in lectures this week. Mr Fomison believes that a case can be made for the drawings having a serious purpose. The lectures will be given in the lunch-hour tomorrow, 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. and on Thursday evening at 8| o’clock. Both lectures will be in the Canterbury Society of Arts Gallery, 66 Gloucester Street. The lectures are sponsored jointly by the Canterbury Society of Arts and the W.E.A. An exhibition of tracings by Mr Fomison of Maori rock drawings will be on show until Friday of thisweek.
