Control Of Industry By U.S. Foreseen

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) MELBOURNE, Feb. 23. All science-intensive industries would probably be essentially under American control by the 1980 s, an Australian Nobel-prize winning scientist, Sir Macfarhane Burnet, said on Friday.

Even Russia might then be in the United States technological orbit, be said. Sir Macfarlane Burnet was opening a symposium at Melbourne University on Australia’s needs in post-graduate research training organised bv the National Association of Australian Research scholars.

He said that looking at Australia's position in the 1980 s, he would first assume that the centre of scientific technological initiative would be even more concentrated than it was now to the United States and Russia.

“It might even happen by then that Russia was also in the United States orbit,” he said.

“Short of world catastrophe or some other completely unforeseeable happening, Australia is bound to be a techno-

logical satellite of the United States.
