Wayville Too Small, Say U.S. Trainer

AUCKLAND. The man who developed the famous American pacer, Adlos Butler, said In Auckland yesterday he thought the Wayvilla track at Adelaide was too small for a major event.

"Maybe this had something to do with the fact that I wasn't greatly impressed with the standard of the racing." said E. Cobb, one of America's leading trainer-drivers, who is having a short holiday in New Zealand. He flew to Auckland on Monday after seeing the final qualifying heals of the InterDominion Championships at Wayville on Saturday night. Cobb is accompanied by his wife. Mr and Mrs Russell Carpenter. and Miss Brenda Fellcetti, of Long Island. New York. A noted show jumping rider, Mr Carpenter bred Adlos Butler and sold him as a yearling for >6OOO. Adlos Butler won about >500,000 in stakes during his racing career. He was syndicated for (600,000. He won 26 of his 30 races while trained and driven by Cobb and broke the world, mile record when he went imin 54 3-ssec in 1960. Bret Hanover, which had some great battles with Cardigan Bay, lowered the record to Imin 53 3-ssec in 1966.

Adios Butler is standing at Cobb's Fair Chance Farm in Ohio. Also in Cobb’s care is the former New Zealand pacer, Fort Nelson, which is owned by a syndicate which includes the Aucklanders, Dr J. J. Sullivan and Mr N, J. Taylor.

Fort Nelson went to the United States last year. He has won five races. According to Cobb his stake earnings are >44,000.
