Significant Climb
(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, Feb. 23. The 2500 ft north rock buttress of 9715 ft Mount Darwin, in the Mount Cook area, was climbed on Saturday for only the third time. Ranger R. Ryan, of Mount ;Cook National Park head- ; quarters, said that the ascent, made from the Tasman Saddle Hut (7700 ft was especially significant in that, | New Zealanders accomplished I the feat for the first itme. | They are Messrs W. Whelan; and H. Taylor, two students employed by the Tourist Hotel Corporation at the Her-; mi tage as part-time gardeners. They reached the top of the north buttress at 3 p.m. j on Saturday. Four Australians performed , the difficult ascent in 1967 and early this year an Eng- , lishman and an Australian j made the climb. i •
