DECEPTION ERUPTS

Men Rescued From Bases (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PUNTA ARENAS (Chile), Feb. 23. The British John Biscoe research station was in ruins yesterday after a volcanic eruption on the Antarctic island of Deception. The five-man research team from the base are safely aboard the British research ship Shackleton after being plucked from the island by Chilean Navy helicopters. The middle of Deception has been tom open by three volcanic craters which appeared after a series of violent earth tremors.

The Britons, led by Commander Richard Stocks, were taken one at a time by Chilean helicopters flying through freezing winds and thick clouds of volcanic ash which reduced visibility almost to zero.

Deception, a ring-shaped island with an opening on its northern side, had its geographical shape changed by a similar eruption'in 1967 when Argentina, Britain and Chile were forced to evacuate their research stations there. All three countries claim sovereignty over it.

A navy communique issued in Buenos Aires said the Argentine base had also been evacuated.
