Land Granted For Hunting Resort
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, February 24. An application for 2500 acres of freehold Crown land in the Upukerora Valley, northeast of Te Anau, for a hunting resort had been granted, the Assistant Commissioner of Crown Lands in Invercargill (Mr J. A. S. Shaw) said this evening.
The application was made by Richard Stockton Rush, an American living in Christchurch. “Mr Rush is forming a company,” Mr Shaw said, "and the transfer will not take
i place till the company accepts i the offer.” He would not disclose the price. • It was reported last month
that right of access by shooters to the hinterland would be protected, as would fishing rights on the Upukerora River, which bisects the property.
Land on either side of the river will be retained by the Crown for this purpose. It is believed Mr Rush plans to develop lodges for visiting hunters on the land, but he has given an undertaking that native bush will not be cleared and that land will remain in its undeveloped state. All the hinterland is Crown land, and deer stalkers will still be able to get permits to shoot in the surrounding land. Mr Rush and his guests will also need permits to shoot on the property.
