TIME BALL STATION NOT WANTED

The Lyttelton Borough Council last evening declined an offer by the Lyttelton Harbour Board that it take over the disused time-ball station, but expressed the hope that the board would take steps to preserve "this historic building.” The condition of the building and its surroundings, as well as its comparative inaccessibility limited the uses to which the council might put the station, said a report from the estates committee. Considerable; renovations would have to be done, and it was doubtful if the council could do the work, or properly spend the money required. The board, at its meeting ; on February 5, received an offer from Mr R. T. Dickson i to take over and restore the ; building, but deferred a deci- , sion until the council’s views were known.

Demolition.—lt was agreed to call tenders for the demolition of the old St John Ambulance Association garage, and to get a report on the cost of converting the land for off-street parking. Electricity.—The rise in the demand for electric power since the gas works closed ' last year was shown in figures for the 10 months of ; the financial year ended ; January 31. Sales of current, at $132,490, were $32,046 1 more than the estimate, and ' were the major factor in re- ' venue exceeding the 10-month ' estimate by $55,490. In the ; same period, spending from the account was $174,700, or ' $35,841 more than the esti- , mate. i Removal—Owners were i asked to remove walls that s have collapsed on\ roadways ■ within one month, after which ; the council will clear the roads.
