Traffic Light Work

The Christchurch City Council has set up a traffic signal maintenance section to take over work -on traffic lights from two agents of the firms that installed the lights. In the first year the cost to the council is estimated to be $36,000, against $28;320 by the agents, but this includes capital establishment costs. In the next financial year, when there will be 69 sets of lights, the cost is estimated at $19,440, against $35,370. Cumulative costs up to 1972-73, when there will be 106 signals, are estimated at $107,860 by the council and $156,590 if done by the contractors. In that year the annual costs are put at $30,580 for council work and $50,110 by the agents. Before the change takes place existing contracts will have to be terminated, spare parts bought and council staff trained at the agents’ headquarters.
