Addington Flower Show Draws 1160 Entries

Hundreds of colourful and fragrant blooms from more than 30 different kinds of flowers, as well as large entries of floral art, pot plants, fruit and vegetables, made an attractive display at the Addington Workshops Horticultural Society's annual two-day summer show in the Railway Social Hall at the week-end.

This year the show marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the society and it was held in conjunction with the National Dahlia Society of New Zealand’s annual South Island show.

About 1160 entries were received, 300 more than last year. These were divided into 10 sections including dahlias, gladioli, roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, cut flowers, floral art, pot plants, fruit and vegetables. The secretary (Mr P. E. Meikle) said that the standard of the flowers was good and there were good entries in most classes. The rose section had the most entries exhibited at a summer show.

About 200 entries were displayed in the National Dahlia Society’s show, slightly less than the number shown in Timaru last year. Flowers were sent from throughout the South Island including several from the West Coast, as well as two North Island entries from Hawera and Feilding. The judge (Mr S. L. Holmes, of Christchurch) said that the colour of the blooms, particularly, was very good. He was very pleased to see West Coast exhibitors win some of the premier awards. The premier bloom of the show for both societies, was Tu Tu, a white medium semicactus dahlia, exhibited by Mrs T. E. Meager, of Christchurch, who also won several other premier awards. The flower was awarded the champion of champions certificate by the National Dahlia Society. In the Workshops Society’s show the blue ribbon award for the best dahlia, was won by Mr R. Walker, with Kidds Climax, a giant decorative bloom, with pink and yellow colouring. The flowers in this section ranged from tiny circular pompones less than 2in across to giant decorative blooms measuring more than Rin across. Strathnover, a large white variety, won the blue ribbon award for Mr F. G. Jones in the gladiolus section. Four mauve and purple flowers added interest in this class in which white, red, orange and yellow blooms predominated. Striking Golds The striking golds and bronzes of the chrysanthemums made a splash of colour at one end of the hall. The best flower in this section, a large white bloom with a golden centre, was exhibited by Mrs B. Sharp. Roses in the show ranged from white Icebergs, through the paler shades of yellow and pink Peace, pink Silver Lining to. more brilliant shades of orange Fragrant Cloud and maroon Mr Lincoln.

Flowers in the cut flowers section included sweet peas, clethra, petunias. fuchsias, asters, shasta daisies, marigolds, antirrhinums, lilies, zinnias, gerberas and verbenas. Mrs T. E. Meager won the blue ribbon award with six vases of different kinds of flowers. These included tall white and green eucomis, scarlet gladioli, yellow Henry Shoesmith chrysanthemums, mauve and yellow asters, white sweet peas and pink and yellow dahlias. An attractive arrangement in green and white using gladioli, daisies, grapes and greenery, won the blue ribbon award for the best floral art exhibit for Mrs C. Rains.

Premier blooms which were awarded championship certificates by the National Dahlia Society included Glory, three gold miniature cacti; Sunset Glow, three pink and yellow small decorative blooms; Grandmaster Berger, a mauve exhibition cactus; First Lady, a brilliant yellow medium decorative: New Church, three apricot miniature decoratives: Salmon Rays, three salmon small cacti: Peach Frills, a peach and yellow frimbriated cactus; Super Duper, a mauve large semi-cactus; Mauvette, three mauve pompones; Scarlet Beauty, three scarlet nymphaea: and Kidds Climax a pink and yellow giant decorative. A visitor to the show was Mrs U. Quarrell, of Christchurch, a life member of the National Dahlia Society and a member of the South Island executive committee. She has recently returned to New Zealand after representing the National Society at the golden jubilee of the Netherlands Dahlia Society in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom Dahlia Society’s Show in London.

Mrs Quarrell said New Zealand dahlias compared very favourably with those grown overseas.

Mrs Quarrel is also a vicepresident of the United States Dahlia Society and has had two flowers named after her, one in the United Kingdom in 1949 and one in New York in 1965.

An impressive display of about 50 different varieties of dahlias was exhibited at the show by Howden’s Nurseries and an interesting selection of garden sprayers was displayed by the Christchurch Mechanical Works.

The prizes were presented yesterday by the president of the Workshops Society (Mr J. F. Olsen).
