RUN BRINGS $226,325
A 2275-acre property in the Rakaia Gorge was sold for $226,325 yesterday at auction. The property is the original homestead block of Bayfields station, which extended from Windwhistle to the Acheron River and has been owned by members of the Gerard family since 1873. Buildings include a fourbedroom manager’s house, single men’s quarters, shearers’ quarters, three barns and a woolshed able to hold 600 sheep. There is 1600 acres of arable land, including 180 acres in lucerne and winter feed, and the rest is tussock terraces. The property runs 4755 sheep, including 2904 breeding ewes and 1322 hoggets. Lambing is over 100 per cent and there are 200 cattle. The property is 55 miles from Christchurch. The bidding quickly reached the selling price of $99 an acre. The property was sold by Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd, on behalf of the estates of A. and K. Gerard and the estate of B. Murray-Aynsley. The auctioneer yas Mr F. Carpenter.
