Hagley High Roll Down
Because of a lower roll at the Hagley High School this year, accommodation posed no problem, said the headmaster (Mr T. R. Richards) last night. “We will be able to dispose of one room and this we intend converting for use as a staff workroom,” he told the school’s board of governors. The roll this term was 1047, a drop of 80 compared with last February. The quite serious drop in the number of pupils who had left the fourth and fifth forms was not expected, Mr Richards said.
Asked by a board member to comment on the recent examinations, Mr Richards said the school had “got the results it expected.” He felt there could have been better liaison with the University Grants Committee over raising the pass marks for bursary examinations- this year. “The examination now is competitive and I do not think headmasters previously thought of it in this way.” The liaison officer at the University of Canterbury had told schools in a June newsletter that the University Grants Committee intended to alter the examination rules at its next meeting. “As it was a national matter I feel we should have been informed directly by the committee and not by the local university liaison officer in a newsletter,” Mr Richards said. The Department of Education advised the board that it bad approved a grant of $2500 to cover the cost of a fourth tennis court. This was now nearly ready for asphalting.
