SURPRISE DEFEAT
Newcombe Fails

The Spanish professional, A. Gimeno, scored an upset, 9-7, 6-3, win over the fifthseeded J. D. Newcomb, to enter the quarterfinals of the Philadelphia indoor open tennis tournament yesterday. Gimeno wore down Newcomb in the long first set, and then skilfully placing his shots, won the first three games to the second test. Newcombe fought back to level at 3-3, but was held to five points in the next three games. T. Okker, the Dutch Davis Cup player, who turned professional last Sunday, had to fight hard to beat the Briton, R. Tayler, 13-11 in the final set. . In another match, R. Gonzales, the seventh-seeded American professional, drew loud applause from the 61,000 spectators by defeating T. Koch, a left-handed Brazilian amateur 6-3, 7-5. Other results were: A. Roche (Australia) beat M. Riessen (Unites States), 10-8. 6-2; J. Kodes (Czechoslovakia) beat S. Smith (United States). a-2, 2-0, 6-2: R. Laver (Australla) beat E. Buchholz (United States), 0-1, 7-5: K. Rosewall (Australia) beat R. Moore (South Africa). 6-4. 0-1; C. Pasarell (United States) beat N. Plllc (Jugoslavia). 6-2. 6-3.
