Polling In India
(N.Z.P.A.’Reuter —Copyright) NEW DELHI, February 5. Polling begins today in 150 of the 425 constituencies of Uttar Pradesh, the first of five North and East Indian States that will choose new legislatures during the next fortnight. The elections are in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Punjab, and Nagaland, which have a combined electorate of about 95 million. For several months all except Nagaland have been under direct Presidential rule because of political instability which followed the 1967 General Election. An all-out effort to win control of the State legislatures is being made by the Prime Minister (Mrs Indira Gandhi) and her Congress Party. Opposition parties, whose members know they alone cannot 'defeat the Congress Party have combined in united ! fronts.
