Legit Alf
Warren Mitchell, who plays Britain’s backstreet Bigot Alf Garnett in a popular television series, has joined the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Mr Mitchell is in Australia at present for a night-club engagement. News that Alf had traded in his foul-mouthed Cockney image for the legitimate stage was announced by Trevor Nunn, the theatre company’s 28-year-old artistic director.
But Alf will not be playing a Shakespearean part. He will take the lead in Simon Gray’s play, “Dutch Uncle,” which will be the final production of the company’s London season at the Aldwych Theatre. Mr Mitchell will portray a gentle suburban husband who hates his wife but tries to speak well—a far cry from the blue-tinged vernacular he uses in "Till Death Us Do Part.” his television series, and feature film.
