SUSPENSION OF PRIEST
<N.Z. P. A.-Rcuter~- Copyright) CRAWLEY (Sussex), February 3. A Roman Catholic priest was suspended last night from teaching in a convent school in Crawley after a national newspaper had reported that he practised black magic and was looking for a virgin to take part in a “black mass.” The board of governors of the Notre Dame School for 300 boys and girls suspended the Rev. Basil Prendergast after the “News of the World” had alleged that he took part in nude rites and meetings of two witches covens.
Father Prendergast ,a probationary Bible teacher at the school, was suspended pending further inquiries, and is reported to have left the town for London.
The newspaper printed an interview between the priest and a girl reporter who pretended to be the virgin he was looking for to take part in a black mass.
Father Prendergast, a Dominican, was quoted as telling the girl she would appear naked and be spread-eagled for the ceremony. He advised he rto take the birth-control pill well in advance of the black mass.
