Easy Win To Mrs Jones
(From Our Tennis Reporter! AUCKLAND. Years of experience in international tennis made the Englishwoman, Mrs A. Jones, too much of a handful for the young Australian, Miss K. Krantzcke, in the final of the women’s singles at the New Zealand open tournament.
Mrs Jones lost only the one game in each set, Miss Krantzce held her service only once, and Mrs Jones won three games to love, one of them on Miss Krantzce’s service.
Miss Krantzce had done well to beat Mrs Jones’s professional colleague, Mrs B. J. King, in her semi-final, but Mrs Jones was standing no nonsense. The very first game was a love game. Mrs Jones served excellently, her positional play was superb, and she used the
drop shot to advantage. The tall Miss Krantzce, on the other hand, very slow and deliberate in her movements was also too slow in her stroke production. She takes a big swing for most of her shots and hits th. ball late which gave Mrs Jones plenty of time. The occasional good passing shot was nullified by many errors.
For this Mrs Jones received $791 and Miss Krantzce $422 as a registered player.
These two later had another duel in the doubles when Miss played better, hitting her forehand especially well. Mesdames Jones and King beat Misses Krantzce and H. Gourlay, 6-2, 9-7. but for much of the game Mrs Jones was carrying Mrs King who was still not playing well. However, the energetic little American came on to her best form at the end and won the last two games in brilliant style.
