League Training Scheme
Senior and senior second division Rugby league players in Canterbury have been offered the opportunity to take part in gymnasium and field training organised by the Canterbury board of control. The scheme, outlined by the convener of the provincial selection nanel (Mr E. Butts) at a meeting test evening, will begin on February .12 at the Show Grounds.
Mr Butts said that players hoping to 'Win representative selection would need to be physically fit before the season opens on April 12 because of the fullness of the provincial and International programme. Canterbury will be required to defend the Northern Union Cup early in the season, a New Zealand iinder-23 team will tour
New South Wales early in May, and trials will be arranged to select the Kiwi teams to play Australia in May and June.
Physical training and weightlifting instructors would be employed to assist the selectors, Mr Butts said. Coaching Conference Coaching administrators from all leagues, members of the New Zealand council, the New Zealand selectors and leading coaches will attend the national coaching conference in Christchurch from February 14 to 16.
Mr L. R. Huston said last evening that the guest speaker. Dr B. Corrigan, from Australia, would lecture on the conditioning of players and training schedules.
