Chief Justice In South Africa
Sir, —The Chief Justice, while in Johannesburg, is reported to have said that an anti-apartheid group, not well organised, opposes apartheid and sports tours. This not well organised anti-apartheid group numbers its membership in hundreds and has to have a ballot for its executive, surely a rare achievement in volunteer organisations’ Perhaps the Chief Justice would like to debate the situation with Dennis Brutus, also provincial Rugby representative who is touring New Zealand? The Chief Justice is president of the New Zealand section of the Commission of Jurists. If he reads the International Commission’s Bulletin for June, 1968, he might read that “South Africa’s Terrorism Act is a piece of legislation which must shock the conscience of every lawyer.” Apparently not the Chief Justice’s.—Yours, M. O’NEILL. January 31, 1969.
