A number of press articles over the last year have indicated that bribery has invaded almost every area of Soviet life, from finding a better flat or getting a better job to having a lorry repaired. In one housing commission, the Moscow evening newspaper reported recently, bribery was so commonplace that it was talked about almost openly. A woman who wanted a better flat paid the commission director 100 roubles (SNZ100), and she got it The director, after being convicted of repeated bribetaking. was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
