Alternative To Coal

The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Gutbrey) has been told by the New Zealand Clean Air Society that the Mayor’s coal and blanket fund should be renamed the “Mayor’s comfort fund” as a first move towards “correcting the schizophrenia of the delusory comfort of the coal fire.”

“Instead of encouraging our senior citizens to continue with the archaic processes of carting coal from cold outside stores and removing ashes and soot, we should do just the opposite,” Mr P. V. Neary, the society’s publicity officer, wrote to Mr Guthrey. Recipients of benefits from the fund should be given vouchers redeemable at the Municipal Electricity Department or the Christchurch Gas Company, Mr Neary suggested.

Mr Guthrey has replied that the suggestion of offering equivalent heating vouchers to be redeemed by the M.E.D. will be referred to the electricity committee.
