ANIMALS’ HOME

Improvements By S.P.C.A.

Six new dog pens, specially for summer use, will be built at the animals’ home in Wilmers Road, Sockburn, run by the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, bringing the number of pens to 18. Mrs S. M. Whyte, a member of the council of the society, said yesterday that the pens, of timber and wire netting, would be built over grass instead of concrete, which was often too hot for the dogs in summer. Most of the timber for the pens had been given by Christchurch timber yards and sawmills, she said. Improvements to the 10acre grounds at the home were planned, said Mrs Whyte. The society would be grateful to any person willing to give shrubs or plants. The society also needed a trailer for use with the ambulance. It was often necessary to collect animals in distress other than domestic pets, and these could not be carried in the ambulance, she said. These animals included pigs, horses, cows and sheep. The response to an appeal made by the society last month for old newspapers, chipped and used plates, material for cushion covers and partly used tins of paint, had been wonderful, and the society was very grateful for the gifts said Mrs Whyte. Several other gifts, includ- : ing dog baskets, kennels, a basket for carrying animals overseas, mattresses, blanki ets, many of which were in . new condition, and boxes of • chocolates for raffles, had also been received. Some of these i items would be used at a I paddy’s market and a. pro- • duce stall which would be held during the year.
