DANGER TO FORESTS

High Fire Risk

The Forest Service has asked the public to exercise the greatest care with fire in forested areas of Canterbury. The principal ranger of the Canterbury conservancy (Mr T. E. C. Bridge) said yesterday that the fire risk at pre sent was very high to extreme in all forests.

The danger is greatest at Waipara where the north-west I winds have dried the countryside out badly during the last few days. The situation is also serious at Eyrewell, Ashley, Balmoral and Hanmer.

Mr Bridge said rain was badly needed to dampen down conditions in the countryside.
