Nuclear Blast Shakes Desert
; (N.Z P A .-Reuter —Copyright) PAHUTE MESA (Nevadal. December 20 J One of the mightiest nuclear blasts yet fired in the United States jarred the Nevada Desert into upheaval yesterday and sent shock waves rippling for hundreds of miles. The hydrogen-type blast, against which some scientists, labour leaders and pacifist groups had protested, though it was deep underground, had the force of a million tons of T.N.T. The blast was at the bottom of a 4600 ft-deep shaft drilled into the 6200 ft-high Pahute Mesa, 105 miles north of Las Vegas, in which city tall buildings swayed perceptibly, as they had in previous large shots.
