Land Sold Seven acres of land near Woodend was sold for $5700 at auction in Christchurch yesterday. The land is on the Woodend-Rangiora Road, a mile from Woodend and three miles from Rangiora. It was offered by Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd, for Mr L. S. T. Collins. A 56-perch section at 100 Paparoa Street, Papanui, was sold at auction yesterday for $4500 by Livingstone and Company. The auctioneer was Mr M. C. Blackett. Decision Welcomed It was gratifying that black swans were to be left as a game bird and not declared a pest, said Mr G. Mugford at a meeting of the council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society last evening. “There are many people who would like to cut out the sport,” he said. Combined Service The congregations of the Christchurch Corps of the Salvation Army, the Durham Street Methodist Church and the Christchurch Methodist Central Mission will combine on Sunday for a Christmas service of thanksgiving to be held on the lawn in front of the Supreme Court at 11 a.m. The service will be conducted by the superintendent of the mission (the Rev. W. E. Falkingham), and the preacher will be the minister of the Durham Street Church (the Rev. W. S. Dawson). Major R. B. Knight, of the Salvation Army, will address the children, and the associate minister of the mission (the Rev. A. R. Bowden) will read from the Scriptures. Music will be played by the Salvation Army band. If the day is wet the services will be ‘held in the Citadel. Taken The Lead Mr J. Manson has taken the lead in the M. A. Cameron Cup contest for the heaviest salmon caught in Temuka district rivers, having taken a 201 b fish in the Rangitata River this week.—(F.O.O.R.)
