Demonstration

Bv J

M.E.D.

Latimer Square was an arena of light last night as the Municipal Electricity Department and the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board put on a demonstration of emergency power and lighting before more than 100 representatives of local bodies, police, fire brigades, and service organisations. Included in the demonstration were battery spots, 15in floodlights, 18in searchlights and lighting powered from a small hand generator. Mr J. P. Shelley, the general manager of the M.E.D., welcomed those present He said that the 35 kilowatt generator set had been developed primarily for the department’s own use although it could prove to be a valuable piece of equipment for civil defence and general emergencies. The generator truck gave a demonstration of its 40ft hydraulic platform which can be used as a floodlighting tower. The M.E.D. generator set produces 35 kilowatts and the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board unit produces 50 kilowatts. Mr Shelley said that the mobile generator vehicle was available immediately in an emergency. Where the emergency was genuine there was no charge for its use. The other equipment on display was also available for emergencies but not necessarily immediately.
