RACING Meldie Not To Run In Gold Cup
Meldie will not run in the Hazlett Gold Cup at Wingatui on Saturday. This decision was made after a training gallop with Sabell on the plough at Riccarton yesterday morning.

They came home from the half-mile in 52 and ran the last three furlongs in 37 3-ssec. Wenew was three-quarters of a length ahead at the end. Wenew will run against the i hack milers in the President’s | Handicap on Saturday. DREW OUT Master Sheeny (Bull) was too smart for Sleeky Fox| (Mein) over the concluding stages of six furlongs. In the last half-furlong Master Sheeny drew out to beat his stablemate by four lengths, recording Imin 18se.c for the distance, the last half-mile in 52sec and the final three furlongs in 39 l-ssec. Master Sheeny is another Riccarton light-weight in the| Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap. Spanish Fox (Quayle) and ; ; Aerobat (Reed) were together ’ throughout six furlongs in i llmin 17sec, the last half-mile' : in 50 4-ssec. and the final l three furlongs in 37 2-ssec.
Meldie shaped well in his gallop and appeared to be quite free in his action on pulling up, but his trainer. J. L. Barr, is not convinced that he is free of the soreness which prevented him running in last Saturday’s Hororata Cup. He thinks the horse may be developing a splint. Meldie (Tucker) and Sabell (Carsten) worked up to speed [from the five furlongs. Early jin the run home it looked as if Meldie would have an easy victory but Sabell drew up in the last 30 yards to j finish on terms. They ran the (distance in tmin 2 2-ssec. the I last four furlongs in 49 4-ssec (and the final three in 37sec. In the first heat Totara Boy j (Beck) led Apollon (Low)' and Foreign Aid (Moir) by a length and a half at the finish. One Spot (R. McCann) I led in the others. Totara Boy, which has been educated for his Totara Flat' owner, Mr W. J. Dudley, by, IW. H. Beck, is a two-year-old! j half-brother, by Ribolight, to; Totara Lad. , In the second heat Miss; ’’Goldwyn (G. Jackson) and! iGrey Ghost (D. N. Hadfield),] :!a Rousseau’s Dream filly in J. : IS. Shaw’s team, finished together, well clear of their three rivals.
