DEATH OF BOY
Charge Not Upheld (N Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, December 17. A manslaughter charge against Shiels Concrete Supplies, Ltd, arising from the death of an 11-year-old boy who was buried in a gravel hopper, was dismissed by Mr J. D. Murray, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The Magistrate said that there was insufficient evidence to place the company on trial for negligence. Anyone looking back could see that if certain things had been done the tragedy could have been avoided, but the test was foreseeability, he said. The company was represented by Mr A. J. H. Jeavons, with him Mr J. Conradson.
Supply Ship.— The first supply vessel for Antarctica this season arrived at Lyttelton from Pearl Harbour yesterday afternoon. She is the U.S.N. tanker Alatna, commanded by Captain R. W. Coulter. She will sail tomorrow on the first of four supply trips to McMurdo Sound from Lyttelton this season.
