RANDOM REMINDER

APPOINTMENTS

Two little snippets, to recall to all of those who are with us in crabbed old age the appeal of young people, and little things. The scene is Fendalton Road, by St Barnabas Church. It was only about 10 days ago, which makes it rather late in the year for a duck to be in charge of very small ducklings. But this one was very much in charge, and very conscientious. From the church side of the road, she set off with one small

charge, and walked it to the channel on the far side. There she left it—safe, in the little ditch, from tramping feet and whirring wheels. Back she went for the second one, then the third, fourth and fifth—each being taken over separately. It was a simple but utterly appealing operation, and a reminder that the basic instincts are usually the best. If fluffy little ducklings hold much appeal, the innocence of the small

boy can seldom be rejected either. This one, four years old, was in bed, and his father went upstairs to hear him say his prayers. The little fellow was looking at a book, and advised his parent that he would not be saying his prayers. Naturally, his father asked why he had come to this decision. “God’s not there,” he replied. “I was speaking to him a little while ago. and He’s gone out for dinner and drinks.”
