HORNBY MILE
Ryan Will Compete A top-class field which includes the Olympic marathon bronze medallist, M. R. Ryan, will contest the Hornby Caledonian Society’s invitation mile at Denton Park on January 4. Ryan will be in the city on his honeymoon and has notified the rociety that he will be available for the race. Another prominent runner, K. Ross, of Wanganui, will be in Christchurch the previous Saturday and an invitation has been extended to him. To date, he has not replied. Other competitors are B. R. Burns, R. J. Taylor, and B. Cowan, all of Otago, R. Lowe (Waikato), J. T. Power (Southland) and E. M. Gray (West Coast). One factor that should make the race especially keen is that almost all the runners are on the verge of recording less than four minutes for the distance. None has yet done so but the competition could extract that little extra speed necessary to beat the mark. The Hornby Caledonian Society is working hard to get the Denton Park track in first class order for the race.
