SALES TAX
Minister’s Assurance (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Dec. 17. The effect of the recently announced increases in sales tax on some consumer items would not be felt by the consumers or the retailers, the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) told Parliament tonight. During the second reading debate of the Customs Acts Amendment Bill— which gives effect to the increases in sales tax and customs duties on certain imported items —Mr Muldoon said wholesalers would be able to absorb the increases.
This was because competition in business resulted front exemption from import licensing, he said. But Opposition members contended that the bill would mean a further credit squeeze, a reduction in business activity and an increase in unemployment. The measures would add to the costs of the consumer, they said.
