Dogs On Beaches
Sir, —On behalf of man’s best friend, I request the Christchurch City Council to
reconsider its ban on dogs on beaches from December 15 to March 15 and to allow dogs on the beaches providing they are on a lead. The dogs in general serve us well in every section of the community. In fact, they are a national asset; the police dog, the farm dog, the dog for the blind, the rescue dog, the watchdog, the companion dog, the children’s dog, the household watchdog, and many others, all serve and some die doing so and ask little in return. Through registration they contribute to the council, and if they do break the law don’t blame them; they are unable to read the notices. They cause less damage on the beaches than man himself, so may the council bow to this small request and allow dogs on leads on our beaches?—Yours, ete., PAT. T. SHEEHAN. December 12, 1968.
[Cr H. P. Smith, chairman of the City Council’s by-laws committee, replies: “I agree with Mr Sheehan’s timely tribute to our loyal canine friends and we do not blame them for their inability to read. However, as so little of our beaches is denied them and so much theirs to do as they please I think that if they could read the notices they would say, ‘Fair enough’.”]
